NANOPOWER second year is now completed

The NANOPOWER project has now completed the second year of activity and has reached a full maturity. It was conceived in order to address the powering issue in microscale electronic devices. The scientific objective of this project is thus to study energy efficiency with the specific aim of identifying new directions for energy-harvesting technologies. With this aim, three different classes of prospective power generators are presently under scrutiny by the six research groups composing the NANOPOWER consortium: nonlinear nanomechanical harvesters, heat rectification and quantum harvesters. For each device class significant progresses have been made. Two patents for two new concept devices are under consideration: a novel method for storing tiny quantities of energy at microscales and new nanoscale electric generators based on purely quantum devices.

NANOPOWER paper gets highlighted

The recent paper Magnon-driven quantum-dot heat engine, written by  Björn Sothmann and Markus Büttiker from Université de Genève and published by Europhysics Letters (EPL 99 27001 (2012)), has been highlighted as editor's choice, "because it covers important new research in topical areas that are insightful and useful to the research community". 

The paper, that reports the results of recent research under NANOPOWER project, has now been highlighted in the most recent EPL newsletter as one out of three of this year's papers that has already received a lot of interest, cf. here

The authors investigate a heat to charge current converter (see the scheme in the picture) consisting of a single-level quantum dot coupled to two ferromagnetic metals and one ferromagnetic insulator held at different temperatures. They demonstrate that this nanoengine can act as an optimal heat to spin-polarized charge current converter in an antiparallel geometry, while it acts as a heat to pure spin current converter in the parallel case.

NANOPOWER Consortium and Board meeting in Würzburg

 

Last NANOPOWER Consortium and Board Meeting was held in Würzburg on May 3-4, 2012.

A representative for each partner were present. On the 3rd they discussed the project status review with reports from every WP leader, while on the 4th detailed specialized talks on scientific activities were presented (agenda).
